Cataract and Lens Implants

Extra capsular Cataract Examination (or ECCE)

In ECCE, a relatively smaller opening is made (10-12 mm) because the cataract is removed in parts only the hard nucleus is removed as a single piece while the cortex which is softer in consistency is sucked out of the eye through a thin tube.

The back (posterior) capsule of the natural lens is not removed since this is used as a support for an IOL. At the conclusion of the surgery sutures are applied to close the opening made in the eye.
