Diabetes: A Disorder, Not a Disease

DR. MAHUYA SIKDAR, Consultant Diabetologist,

Rotary Narayana Netralaya, Rotary Nayayana Hrudayalaya

Diabetes is a global epidemic of the 21st century. Diabetes Mellitus at present affects 7 per cent of the world’s adult population. It threatens health, economy and prosperity and is predicted to cost the world economy at least USD 490 billion by 2030.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body can not effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that enables cells to take in glucose from the blood & use it for energy. Failure to produce insulin or when insulin does not act properly or both, leads to raised glucose (Sugar) levels in the blood. This is associated with long term damage to the body & failure to various organ & tissues.
