Eye Donation and restoration of sight through corneal transplants is a very exciting combination of selfless charity and the miracle of medical technology. Removal of eyes takes only twenty minutes while surgical corneal transplant can be performed in half hour. The Eye bank’s primary mission is restoration of sight. In order to fulfill this mission, the Eye Bank provides corneal tissue for transplantation, supports research, training and promotes public awareness of the need for donors.

 
Need of Eye Bank
  • There are approximately 1.2 core blind people in India

  • Of these around 20 lakh Corneally blind are in need of corneal transplantation.

  • As against an annual requirement of 1,00,000 corneas, only 22,000 corneas are donated in India at present

Mission of an Eye Bank

The eye bank’s primary mission is restoration of sight. In order to fulfill this mission, the eye bank provides corneal tissue for transplantation, supports research, training and promotes public awareness of the need for donors.

 
What is an Eye Bank?

The eye bank is a non-profit organization and obtains, medically evaluates and distributes eye which are donated by humanitarian minded citizens for use in cornea transplants, sclera reconstruction, research and education. To ensure patient safety the donated eye and the donors medical history are evaluated by the bank staff in accordance with the eye bank association of Americans (EBAA) strict medical standards.

 
Functions of Eye Bank
  • Availability of trained staff round the clock to attend the calls

  • Evaluate & provide quality corneas to corneal surgeons

  • Enable corneal research using eye unsuitable for grafts, to find newer techniques, improve preservation methods and train corneal surgeons.

  • Increase public awareness about eye donation and eye banking

  • Train doctors for eye removal procedures

  • Develop and establish a network of eye donation centers.

Who can Donate Eyes?

  • Everyone

  • Except chronic infections

Persons with AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Rabies, Septicemia, Acute leukemia Blood Cancer, Tetanus, Cholera and infectious diseases like Meningitis and Encephalitis cannot donate eyes.

 
How can I become a donor?

The most important action you can take to ensure you will be a donor is to tell your family and legal representative.

  • Families may give consent for donation.

What are the benefits to a donor family?

In addition to fulfilling your loved ones wishes, donation can offer comfort to a grieving family. Just knowing a small part of our one is gifting one is going in life, helping someone see in this world is consolation, something to hold on to in a time of sorrow.

 
Facts about the eye donation
  • Eyes can be donated only after death

  • Eyes must be removed within 6 hours after death

  • Eye removal procedure takes 20-30 minutes only.

  • A small quantity of blood will be drawn to rule out communicable diseases.

  • Eye retrieval does not cause disfigurement

  • The identities of both the donor and the recipient are kept confidential
