Uveitis

Causes

What causes Uveitis?

In many cases the underlying cause for uveitis remains undetermined. It often occurs in association with systemic diseases like sarcoidosis, tuberculosis etc. It can also occur due to auto-immune reaction to ocular antigens. In these cases the body seems to sense some of its own proteins as “foreign” and develops an inflammatory response.

In some cases, the cause may be a local invasion of infectious agents like virus, bacteria, fungus or a parasite (toxoplasma, toxocara). To delete these possible causes of uveitis, we often order laboratory tests, x-rays and specialist consultations. In spite of extensive investigations, it is quite possible that no clue to the cause of uveitis is obtained.

Trauma to the eye, or even the other eye in the past, can lead to Uveitis. In many cases the cause is said to be unknown. This may well mean that the Uveitis is of the autoimmune type. The word “idiopathic” may often be used to describe this group.
